The Quick Sip
Rooibos has long been drunk in South Africa. It is a fine herbal for those seeking a naturally caffeine free alternative with a high level of antioxidants. Green Rooibos is to Red Rooibos what Green tea is to Black. Un-oxidized green Rooibos has a milder taste than its Red counterpart. In our Rooibos Ruby, the tanginess of rhubarb is balanced nicely by mild berry sweetness. Adorned with blue mallow blossoms, this Green Rooibos is flavoured with red berries, rhubarb pieces and pleases both the eye and palate.
Tea Tales
The Rhubarb plant is native to Asia and was often used by the Chinese in their traditional medicine. It was not until the 17th century, when sugar became commonly available, in effect helping to offset Rhubarb's tanginess, that it was used as food. Until the 1940s rhubarb was considered a vegetable. It ‘became' a fruit when US customs officials, baffled by this ‘strange' foreign plant, decided it ought to be classified according to the way it was eaten. Sounds logical.
